In English, the term "mosque" refers to types of buildings dedicated for Islamic worship. There is a distinction in Arabic between smaller, privately owned mosques and the larger, "collective" mosques which have more community and social amenities.

A mosque is a place where Muslims can come together for prayer. It is also a place for other activities of their life (for example, a centre for education or information). Mosques are known around the world for their general importance to the Muslim community as well as their demonstration of Islamic architecture.

Islam's holiest month, Ramadan, is observed through many events. Muslims must fast during the day during Ramadan, mosques will host dinners after sunset and the fourth required prayer of the day, maghrib. Food is provided by members of the community, thereby creating nightly dinners.
